Run
Lola Run is an incredible artistic film. The film opens with
Lola (Potente), a young girl with red fiery hair, receiving
a phone call from her boyfriend Manni (Bleibtreu). Manni has
just accidentally lost $100,000 that belongs to a gangster,
who he is supposed to meet in twenty minutes. Manni decides
that the only way he can save his life is to rob a grocery
store that is nearby. Lola begs him not to rob the store and
tells him that she will think of something and be there in
twenty minutes. Lola begins running to Manni and encounters
many different circumstances and people. The unique aspect
of this film is that three different outcomes are shown when
Lola begins to run. Each of her and Manni's situation and
fate change with each different sequence.
Run
Lola Run is a fast paced and clever film. It shows that the
little things we do each day can change our lives. However,
this film is a love story about Lola and Manni. Run Lola Run
was filmed in Germany and does have subtitles. The cast and
crew is German as well. The film won Best Picture at the Seattle
Film Festival and also won the Audience Award at the Sundance
Film Festival.
The
direction in Run Lola Run by Tom Tykwer is brilliant. The
film is very quick with great shots and angles of Lola on
her mission. Tykwer also blends in some cartoon animation
that is also an effective impact. Also, Tykwer develops a
unique element with the characters that Lola sees and runs
by. For a split second Tykwer uses glimpses of what happens
to each character in the future.
The acting in the film is superb. Franka Potente gives an
outstanding go for broke performance as Lola. Moritz Bleibtreu
also delivers a nice and very effective performance as Manni.
Run Lola Run is a really awesome film. The movie is very sharp
and original. Look for it to receive an Oscar nomination for
Best Foreign Film and to be a contender for many other nominations.
