14th May 2002: War Of The Worlds Update:
Variety have posted information that state that Steven Spielberg may helm the Cruise/ Wagner production of War of The Worlds for Paramount Pictures. This also appeared at Coming Soon.

Before Paramount announced Tom Cruise and C-W partner Paula Wagner would produce H.G. Wells' "War of the Worlds" as a feature, word circulated in Hollywood that the pic would reteam Cruise and his "Minority Report' director Steven Spielberg. Spielberg wasn't mentioned in the announcement, nor was Par saying Cruise would be the pic's star. The studio told Dish there was no director and a spokesman for Spielberg denied he was involved. Then again, that was the response when Dish revealed C-W was circling David Fincher to helm "Mission: Impossible 3," an alliance subsequently announced in stereo. Stay tuned.


10th May 2002: War Of The Worlds (Cruise Project) Update:
Today, Variety reported that Paramount Pictures are to release a new War Of The Worlds movie, produced by Tom Cruise and Paula Wagner (Cruise/ Wagner Productions). The studio hope that Cruise will also star in the film, to begin production in 2003 for a possible late 2004 release. War Of The Worlds is based around martians attacking various cities on Earth and is based on HG Wells book, first published back in 1898. A play, narrated by Orson Wells was broadcast across the globe back in the thirties in a radio news style format, scaring most of the population. In fact, real news stations had to announce that the broadcast was in fact a work of fiction straight after. It was that convincing. This is the second War Of The Worlds film to be put into production. British filmmaker Timothy Hines had a version in production for Pendragon Pictures, but that project was put on hold after the September 11th attacks in the US. Hines planned to set the story in its original Victorian setting, rather than bring it up to date, as it was originally planned. I was at the time quite excited about Hines' version. They even had a star attached in the form of Katie Tomlinson along with concept drawings as well. Check out details of that project here.

It's not yet known who will direct Paramount's version or what time setting it will be indeed be set in. More details as and when.
