An anonymous scooper sent me an email
earlier saying that he has word that Solaris is to be released
in the US on December 13th of this year. I haven't been able
to confirm this yet, but i'll keep you posted.

Natasha McElhone (Ronin) has joined
the cast of Solaris. She will line up opposite George Clooney
in this Steven Soderburgh directed sci-fi fare.

Cinesite are in talks to create the
visual effects for Solaris. The Hollywood Reports states that
the VFX work on the project will include 2-D and 3-D effects.
Shots will include spaceship exteriors, CG waterscapes, the
creation and healing of CG wounds and greenscreen-composited
planetscapes.
"We always look forward to working with Steven because
he understands the possibilities of today's digital technology,"
said Tom Smith, Cinesite's "Solaris" VFX supervisor.
"Working with him on a project like 'Solaris' creates
ideal conditions for excellent effects."

Some information was sent to me on the
locations that the Solaris shoot may take in when it kicks
off shooting later this year.
"The next movie to be filmed on the North Olympic
Peninsula could be a science-fiction thriller. 20th Century
Fox officials are considering a rural West End location as
the setting for the upcoming film, Solaris, starring
George Clooney. Free-lance location scout Michael Allison
confirmed Tuesday that the major studio is considering the
Forks area because of the frequent rain and overcast skies.
Allison would not comment on when a final shooting site will
be selected or discuss other locations currently under consideration.
Forks Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Diane Schostak
said Tuesday the community hopes to learn if the movie crew
is coming in the next few weeks.
Theyve been climbing all over out there,
she said. Theyve been looking since October.
According to Schostak, the location manager and other movie
officials have visited the Forks area about 15 times since
October. Schostak said the chamber has been working with Allison
and other movie officials to find a secluded waterfront cabin
as the setting for the movie. Weve helped them
narrow it down to a handful of places, she said."
The weather will help to develop the characters,
Allison said. If the West End is selected, Allison said filming
is expected to take place in May. Thats fine with Schostak,
who said the West End needs the economic boost during a month
that is considered off-season. Weve got room,
she said. The impact would be welcome and appreciated.
"James Camerons Lightstorm Entertainment
the company in charge of
special effects for Titanic is handling
effects for Solaris, a science-fiction thriller
about a cosmonaut who arrives at a space station on a distant
planet where a ghostly alien life form haunts him.Allison
said the movie company is considering the Forks area, in part,
because of an article published last summer in Farmers Almanac
about Quillayute Prairie Airport".
Thanks to Roger Harnack for sending in the news.

Solaris is the movie that George Clooney
and Steven Soderbergh are planning to team up on after Ocean's
Eleven.
Solaris was originally directed by Russian director Andrei
Tarkovsky, and was somewhat of a critic's fave but enjoyed
as a movie by hardly anyone due to its dreary nature and dull
as dishwater pace.
The story of Solaris follows a cosmonaut arriving at a space
station to replace a deceased colleague, then it heads into
ghost territory with hints at alien lifeforms. So far so so
good. Bu then it goes up its own arse for a deep rumination
on phsychological subtexts.
But this is Steven Soderbergh who is directing, the man who
turned a Channel Four documentary into one of the most complex,
involving and thought provoking movies in years. Oh and George
Clooney is starring. Oh I also forgot, Lightstorm Entertainment
are handling FX duties. And for those who don't know Lightstorm
is James Cameron's FX house the groundbreakers behind Titanic.
So if all they are doing is using Solaris as a base point
and then making their own entirely new movie then we might
have a big hit in the making.
More news on Solaris as we get it!
