No
one can accuse director of Menno Meyjes of choosing an easy
subject for his first directorial outing could they? Hoffman
tells the fictional (it has to be) tale of a Jewish art teacher,
called Hoffman and played by John Cusack trying to broaden
Adolf Hitler's art appreciation after Hitler's return from
the first world war. Apparently Hitler was really interested
in painting for a while, but fell out of love with it and
really hated modern painting.
Quite
a heavy idea isn't it, apparently John Cusack views the script
as the best one he has seen since Being John Malkovich. I
think it's quite say to say we are not in blockbuster territory
with this movie and its audience will more than likely be
the art house circuit.
Menno
Meyjes isn't probably a name you will have heard of before,
I know I hadn't, he previously cowrote The Siege and The Color
Purple. Which certainly gives him a background in dealing
with race problems.
Noah
Taylor is playing Hitler in Hoffman, which will certainly
be a complex and 'interesting' character for him to play to
try and get within the mind of the world's most famous mass
murderer. Noah Taylor has most recently been seen on our screens
in Tomb Raider and is following that up with roles inVanilla
Sky, The Sleeping Dictionary and the amusingly titled He Died
With A Felafel In His Hand!
Also
signed up for the movie is Molly Parker who recently starred
in Wayne Wang's sexually charged The Center Of The World as
a stripper.
Filming
is going to be in Budapest and Amsterdam later this year with
a budget of $11.5 million.
