Playbill.com
have posted a report on Chicago, the upcoming musical adaptation
from Miramax Films.
In an interview with the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Marshall
explains the genesis of his involvement with the project:
"After the success of 'Annie,' I went to meet with Miramax
on Rent, and I said, 'before we do that, can I just talk about
'Chicago'? When they heard my concept, they took me in to
see Harvey [Weinstein], and he said, 'You're the smartest
guy who's walked in here in years.' 'Chicago' has been a passionate
project of Harvey's for so long. He only had six months left
on his option when I came in. Larry Gelbart's a hero, too
and he had written an earlier script. I saw him at the Kennedy
Center Honors and explained my vision, and he called Marty
Richards, the original Broadway producer, and said I should
do it."
John Kander and Fred Ebb's musical, which features such songs
as "All That Jazz," "Mister Cellophane,"
"Class" and "Nowadays," debuted on Broadway
in June 1975 with choreography by the late Bob Fosse and a
cast led by Gwen Verdon, Chita Rivera and Jerry Orbach. The
Tony-winning revival opened in Nov. 1996 with Bebe Neuwirth,
Ann Reinking, Joel Grey and James Naughton in the lead roles.
Featuring direction by Walter Bobbie and choreography by Reinking
"in the style of Bob Fosse," the musical satire
continues to thrill audiences at the Shubert Theatre.
Also, Richard Gere has been talking to the World Entertainment
News Network about his role in the film.
"I haven't done a musical since I was a kid in New
York ... and that was rock band stuff. Probably the last time
I sang was in The Cotton Club. But I'd never done this kind
of Broadway thing. It demands a big Broadway kind of singing,
so I have a singing coach and I'm dancing in it, and these
beautiful girls are moving me around. And I have a big tap-dance
number at the end." The new movie also stars Renée
Zellweger and Catherine Zeta-Jones, and is directed by Rob
Marshall. Gere adds, "I think I'm going to be all right
in the film, but it's the two leads who are so terrific. Renee
is Roxie and she brings out a heartbreaking quality to all
this. I used to think this show was a cold, conceptual piece,
but she does things in a way that just rips your heart."
Thanks once again to Chris for the information.

MTV posted some info regarding the invovlement
of R 'n' B star Mya in the production of Chicago.
"Aside from singing in the studio, Mya has also spent
time lately lending her
voice to the movie version of the Broadway hit "Chicago,"
which is due around
Christmas "I'm dancing, singing and doing a small monologue,"
she said. "It
was really nice working with Richard Gere, Catherine Zeta-Jones,
Queen
Latifah, Renée Zellweger. It was a nice cast."
(Thanks to Chris Gando once again).
Also The Toronto Star reports that Chita Rivera will make
a cameo in the film.

Upcoming
Movies reports that Lucy Liu and Colm Feore have joined
the cast of Chicago.

Check
out these two images over on the left. On the far left
is a candid image of Catherine Zeta Jones on the set of
the Chicago movie taken by Louis D and even appeared in
The New York Daily News. The article reads, "A
wig and hard look transformed Catherine Zeta - Jones into
Velma Kelly, the tough-as-nails moll in the musical 'Chicago.'
The film, |
being
shot in Toronto, is due out Dec.25.". The second pic
(in black and white) is of Denise Faye when she was in Chicago
on Broadway. Our scooper Chris Gando tells us she is also in
the film version. Denise also played one of the two lesbians
in the recent American Pie 2 movie. She spoke to E! Online,
"It makes my heart stop when I read it," she says.
"It's a hot, sexy Broadway show, and the script takes that
brilliant show and makes it worthy of film--and it's brilliant.
I haven't really gotten to speak to anybody since I read it,
so you're the first, and I'm so excited." It seems
that Denise will also choreograph some of the dance sequences
for the film.
A huge thanks to our scooper Chris Gando for the pics and the
information. Chris was also the anonymous scooper that sent
us in some of the information below.

Our new scooper 'Chris Gando'
sent us in som new information on the Chicago film being adapted
from the famous West End/ Broadway musical.
"In a recent [unspecified] television interview Richard
Gere noted that the entire cast has already recorded all the
songs for the film. Parts from the musical numbers "Roxie"
and "The Cell Block Tango" have also been filmed.
Richard Gere returns to Canada in two weeks to film all his
musical numbers. When asked about the singing abilities of
his two leading ladies Mr. Gere said that Ms.
Zellweger sounds like Billie Holliday and Catherine Zeta Jones
sounds like Dusty Springfield".

'Tim' sent us more info on the plot
for the movie adaptation of musical Chicago;
"The story of chorus girl Roxie Hart's cold-blooded
murder of
nightclub regular Fred Casely. Roxie convinces her husband
Amos that
the victim was
a burglar, and he cheerfully takes the rap. Until the police
reveal to Amos that Roxie knew the burglar, shall we say,
intimately,
and Amos decides to let her swing for herself. Roxie's first
taste of the
criminal justice system is the women's block in Cook County
Jail,
inhabited by Velma and other merry murderesses. Velma is not
happy to see Roxie, who is stealing not only her limelight
but her lawyer, Billy Flynn. Flynn
takes Roxie's case and re-arranges her story for consumption
by sympathetic
tabloid columnist Mary Sunshine. Roxie becomes the new toast
of Chicago and Velma's headlines, trial date and career are
left in the dust". (thanks to Tim)
